Notes on System Alterations

Exactly a quarter since last post.

Several days during the end of last month, the server was took offline and got a hardware reconditioning. Meanwhile, the OS refreshed, lots of garbage cleaned.

Before that, only 1GB RAM was available, the system was running Slackware Linux 11.0 with customized 2.4.x kernel. For some historical reasons, bloated Apache was chosen as web server.

Those are all turned into the bad old times. I’m pleased for the reforms as below:

1. The server got 3GB RAM. TBH, it’s so piteous little. Even my laptop has 4GB RAM, and planning to upgrade it to 8GB.

2. Slackware Linux Current is running. Yeah, it’s so called bleeding edge. But with whichever version, Slackware Linux is damn stable for me. Making it more bleeding edge is my pleasure. Anyway, risks is always there, but you’ve got your head there too. So, some kernel features are now available, like epoll, which was lack in 2.4.x kernels. I used to try the epoll patch for 2.4 kernel, but with no luck, and the system got unstable.

3. Goodbye Apache, hello Nginx. I finally get an running Nginx web server! This proposal comes true.

4. Mod_php within Apache was replaced with PHP-FPM, which is no longer a patch but now standalone, announced just yesterday, mentioned by Paul Gao in Google Reader shared items.

With these changes, from now on, I can smoothly keep up with the newest apps (versions). Strict system management rules will be carried out.
